The following photographs depict a recent visit to the Harkness Estate in Waterford, Connecticut. The estate has a history as a 237-acre dairy farm, orchard, and summer home of philanthropists Mary and Edward Harkness. In 1920, a portion of the estate was transformed into an educational, recreational, and medically supported camp for children battling polio. The mansion itself, named Eolia, featured an expansive garden, carriage house, private golf course, billiard room, squash court, and bowling alley. These photographs show the estate as it stands today, as a state park and memorial site.
